Blue ammonia is a low-carbon ammonia (NH3) produced by reacting blue hydrogen with nitrogen sourced from an Air Separation Unit (ASU) using the traditional Haber-Bosch ammonia synthesis process. The blue hydrogen feedstock is produced from natural gas through either Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) or Auto-Thermal Reforming (ATR), both of which are integrated with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology to capture and permanently sequester the CO2 generated during hydrogen production. The purified blue hydrogen and high-purity nitrogen are then compressed and reacted in a Haber-Bosch synthesis reactor over an iron-based catalyst at high temperature and pressure to produce ammonia, which is subsequently liquefied, refrigerated, and stored for use or export. Both Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) and Auto-Thermal Reforming (ATR) are established natural gas based technologies used to produce blue hydrogen as the feedstock for blue ammonia, but they differ significantly in their process design, efficiency, and carbon capture performance. SMR is the most widely deployed hydrogen production technology globally, using steam to reform natural gas into a hydrogen-rich syngas in externally fired reformer tubes, generating both process and flue gas CO2 streams that must be captured separately for effective CCS integration. ATR, by contrast, uses a combination of partial oxidation and steam reforming within a single reactor vessel using oxygen from an Air Separation Unit (ASU), producing a syngas stream with a higher hydrogen concentration and a single concentrated CO2 outlet that is significantly easier and more cost-effective to capture, making ATR a preferred route for large-scale blue ammonia projects with aggressive carbon intensity targets.

Blue ammonia is a commercially scalable, low-carbon industrial chemical and energy carrier with high-value applications across agriculture, energy, shipping, and heavy industry.
